ASAKO TABATA

Amabie, 2020

Japanese paper, acrylic

11.4 x 2.8 x 3.5 inches (29 x 7 x 9 cm)

FROM THE ARTIST:

I removed the chime from a baby's rattle and put it inside this sculpture. It chimes softly when the piece is lifted up, bringing a sensation of wonder and awe.

Amabie, 2020

Oil on canvas

10.7 x 8.7 inches (27.3 x 22 cm)

FROM THE ARTIST:

A picture of Amabie was believed to protect people from pandemic. It would even be more blissful if it appears with a bowl of remedy. Still, a painting is nothing more than a painting. I don’t believe “a picture of Amabie” has any magical power. Still, I believe the origin of painting derives from a desperate hope or belief in God. Please stay safe.
