SEIZAN Gallery New York is pleased to present POND, the first solo exhibition in New York of French-Swiss artist Rose Morant (b. 1963). Morant will present playful sculptures and installations with celestial themes using natural materials found in the artisanal practices of Asia. Born in Paris, Morant began traveling extensively throughout Asia at a very young age. Later, after working with Hermes and other luxury brands in Europe developing homeware and jewelry collections, she set up a studio in Hong Kong and focused on making sculpture. With an extensive first-hand knowledge of traditional crafts and culture in Asia, Morant began creating circular sculptures called “Spheres.” “Spheres” are made of flower powders from offerings to a pagoda in Myanmar. The artist collected the pagoda flowers with a local family, powdered them and shaped the spheres. Each “Sphere” has local gemstones hidden inside. Their surfaces are finished with lacquer, gold leaf, and sometimes accented with gemstones. The focus of Morant's first exhibition with SEIZAN Gallery is "POND," an installation consisting of four groups of the flower powder Spheres: “Spring,” “Summer,” “Autumn,” and “Winter.” The installation layout allows visitors to walk through the installation as if strolling in a garden. The show also includes wall panels made of braided bamboo covered with lacquer and gold leaves, as well as canvas with lacquered flower powders with gemstones from Myanmar. As the world powers through an unprecedented time, the gallery wishes to present ethereal aspects of the world with Morant’s peaceful and powerful installations.
