Yasushi Ikejiri

Born in 1971 in Hokkaido, Japan Works and lives in Tokyo, Japan

Although his works have a high level of realism, Yasushi Ikejiri prefers not to be classified as a realist painter. At first glance, his oeuvre appears to consist mostly of serene depictions of nature, but a further look reveals additional pieces with bold brushwork that seem to envelop the viewer in a sensory haze. These difficult to pin down, contrasting styles, seemingly incapable of having been rendered by the same artist, stem from Ikejiri’s sense of humor and irony, as well as his dispassionate observations of society. Never conforming with the importance placed on concept within the contemporary art scene, aloofly committed to his own brand of naturalism, Ikejiri’s works can perhaps only be understood by standing before them.
